There are all types of credit cards and credit card rewards programs available, with everything from points systems to earn airline tickets to cash back credit cards. Even though using a credit card involves paying interest fees and other costs, they also come with many other benefits beyond the ability to make large purchases when cash is not available. A cash back credit card is one of the most popular types of credit cards available right now, since cardholders can earn cash for every purchase they make on their card.
The terms and conditions which apply to cash back credit cards vary from card to card, but they all work more or less the same. You make purchases with the card and earn a certain amount of cash back each time. After a while, you receive this cash back. Cardholders of cash back credit cards can choose to either have a check mailed to them or have the cash back amount applied towards their balance instead. Either option means that the cardholder benefits from the cash back rewards program.
The method for accumulating cash rewards will differ from credit card company to company, but most will offer minimal rewards for all purchases. Some even offer double or triple reward points when purchases are made at specific locations, such as major grocery store chains or even gas stations. Extra points are usually awarded for the first purchase made on the card when the account is first opened, and bonuses can even be rewarded when large purchases are made on luxuries such as appliances or electronics.
The disbursement of these rewards will come at different times depending on the credit card company offering the cash back credit card. Many will make the payment upon the accumulation of a certain amount, $50 is common. Other companies will allow cardholders to simply request a check when they would like one. Bi-annual and annual payments are commonplace as well - and osme companies will just apply the cash rewards to the cardholder's balance.
No credit card is perfect, even a cash back credit card. There will be a monthly finance charge if you do not pay off your entire balance, with the majority also charging an annual or even monthly fee. There may also be processing fees assessed when a disbursement of cash rewards are made. The usual fees for credit cards also apply here - late fees, over the limit fees and balance transfer fees. Another word of warning - with many cash back credit cards, making a late payment can void your cash rewards.
Cash back credit cards offer many benefits to the consumer. For those who use their credit cards for the bulk of their purchases, these cards' rewards can really add up. While there are downsides, the benefits of cash back credit cards easily outweigh them for most consumers.
